Kannur airport current status

1. Techno economic feasibility study

Techno economic feasibility study completed.

2. Government approval

Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India has given in-principle approval for the project.

3. Land

An extent of 1276.03 acres has been acquired for Kannur International Airport project as on 7 October 2010, out of 1284 acres notified. Remaining land is expected to be taken over soon.

4(1) Notification for additional 783 acres has been published. Three Land Acquisition units are on the job.

4. Formation of Special Purpose Vehicle

A Company called "Kannur International Airport Limited" has been registered under the Companies Act 1956. The first Board meeting of the Company was held on 18 December 2009. As per the Orders of the State Government dated 27 February 2010 Kannur International Airport will be set up as a private airport by a Government led consortium. 26% of equity will be with the Government, 23% with Public Sector Undertakings, 2% with other institutions promoted by the Government and remaining 49% with private individuals and institutions. Government have reconstituted the Board of Directors of Kannur International Airport with the Hon'ble Chief Minister as Chairman and Shri V Thulasidas IAS(Retd.) as Managing Director and the following persons as members:

5. Appointment of consultants

For the implementation of Kannur International Airport project, it is now proposed to select a consultant who will revise and update the TEFR prepared earlier and prepare revised master plan including detailed drawings and designs.


Revised Request for Proposal for selection of Integrated Project Consultant was advertised in Business Line (all editions) on 25 September 2010 and Economic Times (Mumbai and Delhi editions) on 24 September 2010. Detailed RFP has been published on our website. Last date for receipt of proposals is 18 October 2010.

6. Access to airport and other outside infrastructure

District Level Committee under the Chairmanship of the District Collector is giving final shape to the proposal for infrastructure development programmes outside the airport like roads, power and water.



A new green field road viz. Kannur-Mattannur road will be developed as the main access to the airport designed to ensure fast and free movement of traffic to the airport without traffic lights and juctions, with provision for entry and exit ramps for joining and exiting traffic from connecting roads. All other major roads will be widened wherever possible and will be connected to this road.

Meetings of PSUs and Co-operative Institutions for mobilisation of equity

Meetings were held on 23 June 2010 at Mascot Hotel, Thiruvananthapuram with PSUs and Co-operative Institutions for subscription to the equity of KIAL. The meetings were presided over by the Chief Minister, Kerala, who is also the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Company. Minister(Home, Vigilance & Tourism) and Minister(Industries), both Directors of the Company, also attended the meetings.

The meetings decided that PSUs and Co-opertives would subscribe to the portions of equity ear-marked for PSUs(23%) and public(49%) respectively.


Meetings with prominent businessmen and Institutions.
Furthe to the meetings with PSUs and Co-operative Institutions on 23 June 2010, a meeting was held on 21 August 2010 at Kanakakunnu Palace, Thiruvananthapuram under the Chairmanship of the Chief Minister, Kerala, with prominent businessmen to garner support for the project. The businessmen present assured all possible support for the project.
