Kannur airport set to be a dream come true

Over 13 years ago, it was a fantasy entertained by a few people here and it was then dubbed as a project that was destined not to take off. The phase of uncertainty that followed since it was formally proposed in 1997 lasted till the Central government approved it in January 2008. Now the project is all set to be converted into reality as construction work is scheduled to formally commence on December 17. The Rs. 1100 crore greenfield international airport project all set to come up near Mattannur here was not even in the realm of the imagination of those who first mooted the idea of an airport in the district. They entertained the idea of a small airport at Madayipara, until it was shelved on the ground that the land was not adequate for developing an airport. Their longstanding dream took wings in May 1997 when then Civil Aviation Minister C.M. Ibrahim backed the proposal for an airport in the district. The vast extent of land at Moorkhanparamba near Mattannur was identified for th

The Cabinet approval for a heritage tourism project for Thalassery

The Cabinet approval for a heritage tourism project for Thalassery, often referred to as the town of cricket, cakes and circus, will improve the prospects of the coastal town, which has already bagged a prominent place in the State's tourism map. Major tourism spots including the Thalassery Fort, a landmark of the British colonial period, and the Overbury's Folly, a picnic spot facing the sea, are among the heritage spots given prominence as part of tourism development here. The renovation of the St. John's Church and its cemetery where Edward Brennen, British philanthropist, was interred will also figure on the priority list. The development of Thalassery as a centre for heritage tourism was first conceived at a development seminar held on January 2. It was then decided that a master plan for the project would be prepared, giving thrust to monuments of heritage value in the town including old warehouses, Odathil mosque, Thiruvangad temple, court complex, Sub Collector&

Development of access road to Kannur airport - All Parties’ support sought for land acquisition

Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said that acquisition of land for developing major access roads to the proposed Kannur International Airport near Mattannur will be done with the cooperation of all political parties and organisations to tide over local-level opposition to the proposed road development works. Addressing a meeting of the Kannur Airport Action Committee here on Saturday, the Minister, who is also its chairman, said the likelihood of local opposition to acquisition of land for development of six access roads, including the Kannur-Mattannur road, could be overcome if land could be acquired on the basis of negotiations as had been done for acquiring land for the airport, he said. An agency had been entrusted to study the proposed road development projects. The access roads proposed to be developed as part of the infrastructure development required for the airport are Kannur-Mattannur, Thalassery-Mattannur, Wayanad-Mattannur, Nadapuram-Thalassery, Anjarakkandy-Matt

Kerala Tourism and Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan denies Kannur airport stake allotment

The Kerala Tourism and Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan Tuesday denied making any allotment of shares in the proposed Kannur international airport. "The paperwork has begun with regard to the allotment of shares. Initially at the time of talks, a few private sector players wanted 74 percent. When it was said that would not be possible, they asked for 52 percent, which too was negated by the government. At the moment, three private sector groups have asked for 26 percent shares. Anyone desirous of getting shares in the airport can apply and a decision would then be taken to do a pro rata allotment," said Balakrishnan. The Mumbai-based Leela Hotel group and Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Limited (IL&FS), one of India's leading infrastructure and finance companies, are eyeing a major stake in the airport.
